THE CORNBINDER AVANTI

The 1979 prototype International Scout SSV-100 coupe was a glimpse at what a future Scout might have been against a harsh reality.

I will put to rest right now something that has been assumed by a lot of folks since our featured truck was first shown to the public: This was not the prototype for the International Scout III—the like-for-like replacement for the then-current Scout II.

In fact, the initials for the project, SSV, say it all. The name stands for Supplementary Scout Vehicle. While features that are on this prototype (and up to 29 more that may have been fabricated) could have been part of a Scout III, the SSV program was not going to replace an existing Scout. Rather, it was intended to complement the line, with an initial targeted introduction in the 1981 or 1982 model year. A potential all-new Scout III was targeted more toward the 1984 or 1985 model year, so the SSV was more of a way to generate continued interest in the Scout lineup as a whole until a new generation appeared.

While some have referred to the fiberglass-bodied SSV as the “Scout Corvette,” the reality is that it was more of a “Scout Avanti” in a host of ways other than both nameplates hailing from the Hoosier State. Indeed, the International Scout SSV project and Studebaker Avanti four-passenger sports car are more similar than one might think.

10 pages are dedicated to showing off the SSV-100. Be sure to pick up a copy of the March/April 2025 issue of Vintage Truck magazine!
